Casual Cook – On-Call

We are seeking a Casual Cook or Chef who has had previous experience with cooking in rest-homes or hospitals for aged care residents.  This role is to provide cover for our cooks based at each facility around Christchurch.  We have 5 kitchens that cater for our 7 rest homes, catering from 60 to 140 residents and staff daily.  With 10 Cooks in our employment, you would be called upon to cover for annual leave, and other leave as required.  Most of the work to cover for leave will be planned in advance, with some on-call for sickness from time to time.

This role is to prepare and present appetizing and wholesome meals for at least 140 residents and staff daily.   You would be responsible for the preparation and presenting appetizing and wholesome meals including breakfast, lunch (as main meal) and tea (light meal) as well as morning and afternoon teas.  You will also be proficient at baking home-cooked biscuits, cakes, slices, and be able to present special occasion foods to celebrate events throughout the year.  You will also need to have an awareness of,  and be  proficient in providing meals and other food for special diets, allergies and textured meals.  You will follow a specific menu plan provided by a Dietician to ensure residents receive a well-balanced and healthy range of nutrients.

You need to be a team player, leading and motivating kitchen assistants by your example.  You will need to have NZQA or equivalent qualifications in food preparation.   It would be expected that you hold a Food Hygiene Certificate.  A current First Aid Certificate would also be advantageous.  In the absence of these qualifications, we would consider previous industry experience and you would be expected to participate in required in-service education and performance management programs.

All aspects of food planning, storage, preparation, and presentation of the meals will need to meet audit standards.  You may be required assist with the kitchen/meal statistics and meet reporting requirements for the Rest Home Kitchen and Food Control Plan.  You will undertake and supervise daily and weekly cleaning routines in the kitchen as prescribed in the Cleaning Schedule Instructions.
